With our first match looming this weekend I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone at the club: staff, players, volunteers and all who contribute to the running of the club, a very happy new year and a successful season ahead.
I would particularly like to thank all the current board of directors both old and new for all the hard work they have put in over the last twelve months. The four new directors: Phil, Peter, Jeff and Ricky have strengthened the board greatly. Whilst the others: Michael, Gary, Mark and James have continued to put in an enormous effort over the past year. The problems that the club faces sometimes seem never ending and I often think that the directors are in many ways often the 'forgotten' volunteers. So at this time of year with the old season well finished and a new one on the horizon I feel they all deserve a genuine 'well done'.
The close season is usually a time of frenzied activity and this year has been no different. A new coach and a new look team has created a definite genuine 'buzz' about the club and the town in general about the future of the club. We all hope that all of this activity will bear fruit and give us all a great deal of entertaining rugby and a bag full of tries. There remains a prize of £1,000.00 on offer for the player that can break the club's 'most tries in a season' record and I'm betting we might get close and even beat it.
It is also a time for reflection and looking back on last year at the 'people' we have lost to the game, this is always sad but I like to think that Rugby League has been so meaningful to them that it has helped them throughout their lives and continues to be a source of comfort to their loved ones, that the game, they so loved is still cherished and that people of all backgrounds still work hard to keep rugby league alive in west Cumbria and I include our friends at Workington and Barrow. May we all succeed in our endeavors and help each other as much as we can in the future. Remember the clubs all need volunteers and if you feel you can help with a few hours or just an idea do get in touch with your respective club.
Good luck and best wishes to you all Tom.
