Jarrod Sammut hat-trick in vain as Whitehaven edge past Workington in derby

Workington Town half-back Jarrod Sammut scored a hat-trick of tries but ended up on the losing side as Whitehaven won the Cumbrian derby 28-24 at the Summer Bash in Blackpool.

Whitehaven led from the third minute of the Kingstone Press Championship clash when second-rower Dave Allen went over for the first of their four tries, the others coming from Chris Taylor, Jessie Joe Parker and Craig Calvert.

With Callum Phillips and Declan Hulme also touching down for Town, they outscored their opponents by five tries to four but Carl Forber was able to kick only two goals compared to six from Whitehaven's Louis Jouffret.
